Need a New Year's Resolution? How about "Wear tights sometimes"?

OK I know New Year resolutions should really be started on the first of January.  But I figure that any time in January is alright.  So I'm going to do a series of posts on tights related resolutions.  Each suggestion will be for a person at a different stage in their tights journey.

Perhaps your tights journey will take you along the sea shore with the man of your dreams (or not).

Today's resolution is for the woman who just does not wear tights at all.  Perhaps you have had a bad experience of cheap tights.  Perhaps tights remind you of a boyfriend / job / school you would rather forget.  Modern tights are much better than those of a few years ago.  Also if you get a large enough pair of a good make they can be quite comfortable.  I sympathise if tights have bad associations for you.  But why deprive yourself of cool accessory just because of a shit experience in the past?

Just because your ex liked a stocking foot boogie - that's no reason to give up on tights for life!

Nevertheless I wouldn't suggest starting with sheer tights.  They are more difficult to get on without laddering.  Sometimes its too much of a shock to make you legs that visible after a life in trousers!

Tan tights have had a bad reputation for so long (until Kate Middleton that is) you may not want to start your  tights journey with them.

Instead I suggest you pull on a pair of opaques.  Go for a high denier - say 70 or 100.

Opaques have a number of advantages:

• Being thicker they are more robust and longer lasting
• They are warm for this time of year.
• They are the closest tights to trousers or leggings making the transition easier.  

In fact our American sisters don't even use the same word for opaques as they do for sheer tights.  Sheer tights are pantyhose, whilst opaque tights are just tights.

Opaques are excellent for work as they give a professional look without showing too much leg.

Socially opaques can be worn with a short skirt with minimum risk of an embarrassing "up-skirt"
