Tights Quiz 1

Its official guys visiting this site prefer black pantyhose.  So here is a little quiz for you: what denier are the tights of the girl on the right of this picture?  Vote using the survey.  No prizes.  My decision is final.  But leave a comment explaining your choice of denier and you might influence my decision.

In case you don't know denier = A unit of fineness for rayon, nylon, and silk fibers, based on a standard mass per length of 1 gram per 9,000 meters of yarn.

Fall Fashions - What tights will we be wearing this Autumn?

Yesterday I suggested that tights might be a great garment to get into as summer fades into fall. Today, I look at a few trends as predicted (or observed) by the Tulsa World.

Prediction 1.  Retro.  The so-called "ladylike look" has been in high demand since fashion and pop culture went retro - TV shows, such as "Mad Men," have inspired a wave of nostalgia in clothing and design.

Prediction 2.  Going nude - the Kate effect Since the royal wedding last April, all eyes have been on Kate and her accessories. When Middleton started making public appearances - in sheer, barely there stockings - the industry began banking on the look of opaque hose to make a comeback and sales rose. According to the Associated Press, market research firm NPD reported that hosiery sales in the United States were up 2.9 percent from May 2010 to May 2011, raking in more than $3 billion."

I'm sure this would NEVER happen in the royal tights - but in looks fun!

 Prediction 3 There will be lot of opaque tights in unexpected colors.

I can't show you the actual colours because they are unexpected.  But here are some purple opaques

Prediction 4 Thigh highs and socks and stockings.  We will see lot of thigh highs - some with lace or with no lace and many with garter belts.

Prediction 5 Seams and stripes.  As it gets cooler,  women who are used to wearing all black tights in a conservative world, will start experimenting more .... Maybe a sheer leg is what they will experiment with, or a pin stripe or a back seam. Sometimes hose give you that polished, finished look.

Prediction 6 Polka dots will be prominent on opaque tights and hose. There are people who will do a pin-dot hose. They are really cute and quirky .   But if you're going to do a dramatic leg and you want to make a statement, you can't be wearing a statement dress.

Prediction 7 Tights for cold weather. Even when it gets really cold, cable and mohair tights.

Get spotted this autumn (fall)

With the autumal weather coming maybe you are thinking of putting away your shorts and sandals and going to jeans or long winter dresses. Don't do it. Tights can extend the life of your shorts. You can even ware your sandals (although not flip flops) with tights. If this is too radical substitute your sandals for closed toe shoes, chunky platforms or boots/booties. You might like to try longer shorts or shorts made out of a thicker material.

Patterned tights are supposed to be in and these look good with shorts - or even without them. "Shorts offer the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the trend in patterned tights - stripes, burn outs, and textured tights all add a new dimension to legs as you transition into fall dressing," says Jennifer Bayley. (Who apparently knows about these things).

 "Animal prints and especially leopard motifs are very strong fall trends that you can start wearing right now." says Jillian Zrihen, a spokesperson for Foxy Jeans. So go for those leopard print tights now.

Other predicted trends (of less concern here since this is a legwear blog) include:

• Tops and accessories in fall colours such as red, violet, wine, grey, orange and green.
• Lace, floral and sheer blouses and dresses.
• The cocoon sweater is the ultimate layering piece.

A Small Victory for Pantyhose

Mesa Arizona is getting its Hooters Restaurant back according to John D'Anna on azcentral.com 

For those of you who don't know Hooters is the trade name of two privately held American restaurant chains: Hooters of America, Incorporated, based in Atlanta, Georgia, and Hooters, Incorporated, based in Clearwater, Florida. The Hooters name is taken from an American slang term for a girl's tits; its logo is an owl, an animal well known for its "hooting" calls ("wow!" you say "I never knew about the owl's hooting call before" Fuck off. Sarcastic git).

The appearance of the waitresses is a main selling feature of the restaurant. A Hooters Girl is a waitress employed by the Hooters restaurant chain. The girls are recognizable by their uniform of a white tank top with the "Hootie the Owl" logo and the location name on the front paired with short nylon orange runner's shorts. Originally, the shirts were white cotton, low-cut, pulled tight, and knotted in the back to emphasize the breasts and expose the midriff.  The remainder of the Hooters Girls uniform consists of the restaurant's brown ticket pouch (or a black one with the black uniform), -(and here's the bit that will interest my readers) - tan pantyhose, white loose socks, and clean white shoes.

Now this is obviously a small victory for pantyhose.  One more place where sheer tan tights must be worn - standing bravely against the march of the bare legged hoards.  Mesa pantyhose loving men will flock to Hooter's and their nylon meme will be reinforced.  Guys who have never had a thing about pantyhose before will associate sheer tan tights with sexy girls and the nylon meme will take root in their brains.

A victory for women

But a new Hooter's is also a victory for women.  It provides employment for the good girls (and bad girls) of Mesa.  Especially those Mesa bad girls proud of their tits and legs.  But I hear those rabid feminists crying: "Its exploitation.  Women being exploited for their bodies".  Like cleaning offices, working at your local checkout, in a factory or at a call centre isn't exploitation.  And many employers want you for your body not your brains - OK maybe not because your body is sexy - but because it can scan bar codes or pack colonoscopy bags.  Of course the difference between mind and body is false antithesis, but more of that another time.

(Un) dressing for  work

So why is Hooter's good for the girls?

1.  It's a job and that's hard to come by today.

2. It's a laugh.  Well its got to be better than stacking shelves in Tesco.  At least you can have fun with the other Hooter's girls.

3. At Hooter's you make the most of your looks.  Feminist intellectuals make money from their "brains", so why can't other girls earn a crust from tits and pantyhosed legs.

4. At Hooter's you make the most of your personality.  Working at Hooter's is for bright girls.  Not sgirls who have book learning, but girls with social intelligence who know how to work with people.

5. A cute guy might see you in Hooter's and he won't be able to resist you in your tan pantyhose.

And Hooter's girls in pantyhose are good for all us girls.  They make pantyhose more acceptable.  They make more guys want girls in pantyhose.  That's good for all of us who don't have perfect legs or think tights and pantyhose are cool.

Obviously guys who like pantyhose will enjoy Hooters.  But more men will see how sexy pantyhose can be and get into the look, feel and smell of 'hose.

The economy needs growth.  The more women who become pantyhose converts the more pantyhose are sold.  Pantyhose are a regular purchase and provide a steady income stream for retailers and manufacturers.  Girls - wear pantyhose - and create jobs.

Nice to see some of my favorite tights fashions - including polka dot tights and tights with shorts - are still in, as this video from the 20th August shows.  Not sure about the the tights made look like pop socks though!

Will Elle be Fanning tights sales?

The 13 year old star of Super-8, has been seen wearing tights - plain and ribbed.  Joy of Tights hopes that she will encourage other young teenagers - who will be the next generation of tights wearers - to get into tights.  For those who are concerned about the sexualisation of young people will be pleased that she is pale rather than black or fishnet tights.
